The Global Compact
Global Principals Agreement which is a volunteer approach supporting sustainable development and good institutional citizenship applications; is the total of principals based on universally accepted grounds. This forum, which is based on learning and sharing experiences, is also a network which is procuring communication between the institutions and other shareholders.
To contribute to the formation of a common culture on the basis of universal principles in the business world, Akfen Holding signed the United Nations Global Compact on July 2, 2002. It is the first Holding in Turkey which had undersigned Global Principals Agreement.
The Global Compact requires participation companies to work in close cooperation with the United Nations by establishing 10 principles regarding the issues of human rights, labor standards, the environment and anti-corruption. These 10 principles are as follows:
Principle 1. Businesses should support and respect the protection of internationally proclaimed human rights.
Principle 2. Businesses should not abuse human rights in any way.
Principle 3. Businesses should uphold the freedom of association and the effective recognition of the right to collective bargaining.
Principle 4. Businesses should eliminate all forms of forced and compulsory labor.
Principle 5. Businesses should refrain from using child labor.
Principle 6. Businesses should eliminate discrimination with respect to employment and occupation.
Principle 7. Businesses should develop a proactive, activist approach to environmental issues.
Principle 8. Businesses should undertake initiatives to promote greater environmental responsibility.
Principle 9. Businesses should encourage the development and diffusion of environmentally friendly technology.
Principle 10. Businesses should work against corruption in all of its forms, including extortion and bribery.
